The hardest part about BASE jumping, whether it be Tandem BASE jumps (Jumps with 2 people), or sport BASE jumps (Jumps done solo)— usually the jumping part is not the hard part. Jumping off things tends to be a split second decision for all sorts of different reasons. The landing is the hard part. It is the landing safely that actually becomes a complicated task to repeat over and over. Out of 4000+ BASE jumps that I have done— miraculously— I have had all safe landings besides some bumps, bruises, and acts of god that have led to my safety. When you get an invite to somewhere as unique as it is special — you kind of have to say yes. It was amazing to have a handful of people reach out to BASE jump Moab to be the trusted entity to Tandem BASE jump for the Montreal base Festival, Jackalope. The entire festival is surrounding extreme sports energy and it was just amazing to have the option to Tandem BASE jump there. We couldn't say no. OFF to Canada!

BASE JUMP MOAB went to Canada to Tandem BASE jump people off their Crane for the Jackalope festival. We showed up with three tandem base rigs, and instead of jumping Tombstone, Meris Gash, Sweet Spot, Four Horsemen, or Parriott Mesa; we were jumping a wildly unique object… a swinging metal deck suspended 330’ in the air over a concrete landing area. Every single factor was intense and it was amazing to be presented with a challenge that was both exciting as well as challenging. We did 16 jumps over the course of 2 days, all packed and jumped by yours truly. I also let Dante Warlaw do a tandem jump packed as well by himself. He is seen taking a delay right in front of me and my passenger in this video above. Tandem BASE jumping is going to be seen more and more world wide, and events done perfectly and professionally like this— are the key to its success. It was so amazing to be able to share this experience with all my passengers, but it was just as satisfying for me personally. The first ever Tandem BASE Jump completed off of Brazil’s famous Tabuleiro Waterfall (1000’) Andy + Bruno.

I first heard about Tabuleiro in about 2012, making the 2022 jump a ten year goal come to fruition. The Tabuleiro waterfall is 1000’ and seems to be stolen straight out of the Movie Avatar; as if you were plucked off the Earth and plopped onto Pandora. BASE jump Moab traveled there to complete a Tandem BASE jump off the mouth of the waterfalls spillway; however, that goal came with a list of challenges.

The first and foremost challenge was how to get there. Just in terms of flying to Brazil, renting a car, and driving to the waterfall…. This challenge seemed straight forward— but wow! Was it a struggle. Our car was jam packed with gear and people and we had all just completed a BASE with the BoBs course with Scotty Bob Morgan and Ben Dicko; both master fliers. They were helping Brit Zale and I reach terminal velocity and use the power of this. The course was amazing, comprehensive, and being in beautiful Brazil was icing on the cake. Not only were we training in wonderland, we were living in a Jungle Palace. It was heavenly. We checked the maps and we only had…. 12 hours of driving… to get to Tabuleiro. SURE THING! We left with stoke and drove into a glorious mess of dirt roads, chaotic traffic jams, and endless pot holes. It was the most dangerous thing that we did on the entire trip. Hands down. It made me feel like Tandem BASE would feel like church once we were at the exit. When we arrived at our sweet little hotel— we ran into Chase Phillips, or Adrenaline Addiction online— and got to say hi to him as he was leaving. He gave us some beta and made us even more excited for the journey.

I had two Brazilian friends showing up to help us to the top of the waterfall. It was actually Gustavo and Caio that were the Slackliners that introduced me to the area 10 years ago. They were highliners turned base jumper like me and we had been needing to meet for a decade. The fact that we met here was serendipitous and they also brought a local rock climber who wanted to meet me with them; Bruno. It was actually Bruno who ended up being my Tandem passenger! Serendipity again. He’d been rock climbing at this location for a decade himself, dreamed of jumping the falls, but never had created or had the opportunity until now. We all got stoked to make the hike and jump the falls!

We grabbed PFD’s from the National Park entrance and I wanted these because the landing at Tabuleiro is a water landing… Or you can crash into a boulder field! I wanted to take the water option— and I really didn’t want to drown, or have my passenger drown either. We hiked through a wonderland of beautiful flowers, cactuses, saw spiders, snakes, birds, and other plants. We went through a maze of beautifully water carved canyons blessed with a river of rusty red water, filled entirely with minerals collected from its run through the jungle. It was one of those places that you felt like you never wanted to leave— and then we got to the exit. The rest is history! The same day that Henhouse Butte was opened up we had our sights set on Battleship Mesa; BASE jump Moab’s next target for a Tandem BASE jump exit point. We had to repack and gather our gear as well as make lunch and rest a bit. We had so much climbing gear, rappelling equipment, and enough stuff to send any canyon system in the great moab area. Needless to say our focus was on Tandem BASE though.

It took us all about 90 minutes collectively to sort our rigs, clean up camp, and eat lunch. Then it was off for discovery. When you are looking for a tandem base cliff — the point is to find a place that contains enough margin for safety to keep everyone in safety’s sight. This means a sheer or overhanging drop, a long flight is optimal, and a good (enough) landing area is very welcomed. When jumping off fixed objects— dedication and diligence is required every jump— so walking landing areas before their use, throwing rocks from the jump point to test airspace, planting flags to read the wind, having first aid kits just incase, as well as updated emergency devices, walkie-talkies, and many more prevention based tactics are what have kept BASE jump Moab accident free up until this point. When we finally found the diving board on the East face of Battleship Mesa— we knew we had uncovered gold.

Recording footage had become standard in our industry and the shots help the pilot and the passenger remember the moment forever.

When opening a new exit the most important thing is to double and triple check absolutely everything before you jump. Making sure you are present and focused before making the leap is the most important thing you can do. Not only for you as a Tandem BASE jump Pilot, but it is paramount for your passenger too.

In the instance of Battleship Mesa, but also for all other tandem BASE jumps that BASE jump moab executes— there is one really easy way that we inspire presentness; and that it through a present. I give the gift of a little dragon token to my passenger and tell them to keep it. Not only for the jump, but after we land safely the jumper gets to take it home as well. The token is imbued with purpose at the exit when the passenger is asked to make a 360 and take in the views, to go inside themselves and ask themselves for gratitude for some of the most special things in their life; health, community, family, where they are right at that moment… Everyone is grateful for different things but the purpose is all the same— to inspire presentness.

When you take a moment to really take in where you are and what you are doing allows for two main things: 1. You slow down which gives you time to double and triple check 2. By being grateful for the moment you open up your heart to appreciate more of the details of what is happening— right here — right now. Lastly, you have to put some intention in asking for safe travel and believing in a great force than yourself; because… well mostly— it works. Luck is where preparation and opportunity meet, and the intention of being safe and asking the universe for help — couldn’t be a bad thing!

When we jumped the exit off Battleship Mesa, the long search for the exit, the many hours of prep and planning, and all the moments of crossed fingers became worth the struggle. The energy was wildly uplifting and incredibly visceral. The BASE jump Moab Tandem BASE journey was paying off in spades and the safe landings were icing on the cake. The yelling, hooting, hollering, and gloriousness of triumph over what seemed like stacked odds against us was as satisfying as eating a delicious meal in which you watched it be prepared for days on end. Now that we had begun the trip with some amazing new exits it was time to start thinking about the other main reasons why we had come here: to climb the putterman towers, rig a highline, walk it, and BASE jump them both. Well before BASE Jump Moab was formed, the goal was to make BASE jumping available to as many people as possible. It usually takes an incredible amount of training and intentional dedication to start BASE jumping— but, our question was… What if there was another option? What if you could experience BASE jumping without training, expertise, or any previous experience with flight. We wanted Tandem BASE jumping with BASE Jump Moab to be that option for people of all ages, sizes, skill levels, and walks of life!

Up until the other day the oldest people we have ever taken for Tandem BASE jumps, with BASE Jump Moab, were my own parents. My Mom and Dad came out to see my house, support my business, and yes; complete a Tandem BASE Jump, each, with their son. My Mom and Dad, 73/74, both did absolutely wonderful jobs training and being ready for the jumps~ It was very thrilling for them and I think they both had the idea of backing down still in their heads! But, they made the effort to suspend their disbelief and strap in for the ride of a lifetime! It made the Tandem BASE experience for them that much better because they were so impressed to be able to complete a task they previously thought was impossible. Sharing those moments with my parents I will remember forever— from seeing my Mom filled with pure joy and uncontrollable laughing, to my Dad looking and me and saying “That’s a pretty incredible feeling, drew. I’m proud of you.” Ever since, they too have remember that day— and proudly show off their videos around the world as they travel together.

200 Tandem BASE jumps, 3 countries, and 2 years later… I got a phone call late one afternoon with a man on the other side of the line wanting to go Tandem BASE jump right then!

“Hello, this is BASE Jump Moab, Andy speaking… How can I help you?”

“Hi, I just wanted to know more about the BASE jumping and if I can go right now?”

“Right now, right now?” I responded, asking back “are you in town?'“

“I am in town, I’m ready to go, and I found you on Google Maps… I am down the street. Can we jump right now? Or is that not possible?”

I opened up a few weather apps on my phone to check the winds and calculate the best place to take him to jump— and when I confirmed the weather was good, I responded. “Come on over, let’s go try to make a Tandem BASE Jump.”

When I met Cody— I hadn’t expected him to be 79… When I parked at the parking lot, got out of my car, and saw him for the first time— he saw the look on my face and said “You weren’t expecting an old guy, huh?” I chuckled.

He assured me that he was fit, ready, and his stoke was felt from a mile away— so I can’t really say I nervous about his age at all. To me he just genuinely enjoyed life and knew he would love this experience. Some people just know, they feel the vibe, and when their energy shows up smiling and stoked— I can’t help but vibe with them. Cody’s love for life and his enjoyment of adventure made me smile all day. We safely jumped and the next day I took him out on the river to experience white water rapids in his boat for the first time. Somewhere between the hilarious laughter following the BASE jump and the whooping and hollering through the wave trains of the Colorado river…. I thought, “Wow, I hope I’m this bad ass at 79. In fact, I just hope I make it to 79” Thanks for showing me that life never has to get dull Roger, Lynn, and Cody. You’re an inspiration to us all.

Welcome to the Blog, BASE Jump Moab’s online collection of adventures and anecdotes. Since our creation in 2018, I have slowly, but surely, continued progression on all fronts of BASE Jump Moab— just not a blog. I started with many directions that I saw as possible ways to help the community have fun and experience BASE jumping in unique ways. Tandem BASE jumps (1 person flying, 1 passenger), to Multiway Tandem BASE jumps(multiple tandems jumping/flying at once), to ADVENTURE TANDEMS (for people who have exploration and access skills, just maybe not specifically BASE jumping), to BASE jump demos, to BASE jump events, to BASE jumping lessons, to Advanced Courses, to pack jobs, gear sales, t-shirts, Offsite BASE Practice from planes, including tower landings, Tour Guiding canyons, climbing, hiking, rappelling, rope swings, as well as providing media creation, commercial filming, reality tv, product launches—and I wanted to do it all. In the end, trying to do everything may have been too much.

As I started the company I tested the waters and proposed and offered many different products/ services, to many different people, of many different skill sets, and many backgrounds. I asked BLM for permission to jump in over 200 locations… Which is a process that I quickly learned “just doesn’t work like that.” Simply speaking it wasn’t running optimally because we were offering too much, to too many people, and many of the big plans were becoming over complicated or worse just plain getting denied. I didn’t have a clear direction and it was as distracting and it was ineffective and worse it was confusing to our user basis online. I was becoming overwhelmed and knew I had to evolve. Here is a clip of a BASEr mission below. I thought having parachuting systems you can legally skydive that can also be used as base rigs would be rad. It was! We did a handful of tower landing, repack, tower BASE jump missions... But, the BASEr mission failed to catch on to a viable market, subsequently becoming one of the first adventures to be “sifted” from focus (commercially abandoned in early 2020.) Though, legend has it that BASEr missions still can happen.

By the end of 2020 I decided to eliminate the additional focuses of BASE Jump Moab immediately and indefinitely. I had to stop current progression of almost everything, but Tandems and Tandem related investment. I had to focus the marketing, the management, and the momentum. It was hard and felt like failure at first because I truly liked the big dreams and grandiose expectations. I wanted to keep overworking until it magically all fell into place. I just couldn’t keep doing it—so I committed to the revamp. It ended up being the best idea ever to sift the company down to one thing, providing amazing Tandem BASE jumping experiences for customers of all ages, sizes, and walks of life. That would be my main focus— it already was— but, now it would be unimpeded. Here is an example of another semi-sifted idea abandoned as a viable commercial market, Space Net Tandems. It never did get commercially cleared to be an all year activity— but, we did successfully get to launch a bunch of friends out of the net while it was up. We can still rig the net and BASE jump out of it, but the past locations of the net are now being saved for the Big Horn Sheep, Golden Eagles, and native plants. There are other areas though and special permits for recreational topics just like this… So maybe once a year it could still be a thing… I don’t know for sure, but I will never stop at least dreaming big~

To do this I brought on Sylvan Christensen, a good friend, as well as a talented guide and knowledgeable Moab adventurer. He’d worked many years commercially guiding before DM, and together both enjoy pushing adventure in similar directions. Together we split BASE Jump Moab, into a Tandem BASE company, and created a sister company DBA, that would organize climbing, rappelling, canyons, and guiding; Discovering Moab. “You can always keep Discovering Moab!” In splitting the companies, I also split my marketing. I could market BJM as just that, BJM. Clean, clear cut, compelling. Then we could market Discovering Moab, exactly for what it does, adventure tours. Splitting the time and focus investment this way highlighted a single direction for both of our action plans, but also clarified our online storefronts. I could build and maintain BJM more effectively than ever, while he could take the DM baton and run with it. Both companies have run more effectively since. You might have seen one of our ads in and around Moab!

In total, it took more than 18 months to completely split, distill, and revamp BASE jump Moab’s entire business model and over a year to build and prepare for Discovering Moab’s pursuit to run independently. Now in 2022, we both have our first entire year split. I also freed myself up enough now to continue to do personal consulting for online media, TV, Movies, performance, and commercial filming— but I do it under my personal business entity. Doing this allowed BASE jump Moab, Discovering Moab, and Sketchy Andy Lewis to run and act as independent units since mid 2021. It’s just beginning it seems and it’s been more fun than ever. The 2022 season has started — and I can’t wait to get out! Speaking of commercial films, here are two we worked on recently. A Mr.Beast highline. And a Jeep Commercial.
