BASE Jump Moab::: Valley of the Gods ::: PART 2 -- Hen House Butte

HEnHOUse Butte Tandem BASE

BASE jump Moab’s Tandem BASE Moab Camp was set directly underneath the main attraction… The highline to be rigged between the summits of Putterman in a Bathtub and Putterman on the Throne. The highline was barely 50m, but the towers both had potential to become Tandem BASE jump exit points. Brand new ones at that.

The night was COLD. Mostly because we hadn’t acquired our wood burning stove yet… Sylvan and I snuggled in our tent under individual heaping piles of assorted blankets and sleeping bags that were packed into my car in the fashion of fleeing from disaster. There was no rhyme or reason to how we packed everything— we knew what we needed and we jammed it into the back of my 2015 Nissan and the rest that didn’t fit, we tied down to the trailer. So when it came time to make our beds we just used everything we could… It was still cold.

Waking up to the sunrise planted directly in the middle of Valley of the Gods was uplifting, inspiring, and serene. The blue sky was clear and a million, birds began to make their voices heard to the gods themselves, and the fragile sandstone monuments standing tall in the face of geological time beckoned us with whispers. The smell of eggs, sausage, cinnamon buns, and cowboy coffee seeped from Spencers tent creating a nearly visible fog of comforting and tantalizing delight. I thought to myself, “Boy howdy do I need to get a wood burning stove for my tent.

It was fantastic to think about all the Tandem BASE jumps we had done all year to prep for these exciting and new jumps, in a new place, done in a new style. We had tarps laid out in camp so that we could pack our parachutes without too much dirt or dander finding solace in the skin of our canopies. The sand and dust and dander build up in the stitching and sewing of the parachutes and without tarps you decrease the lifespan of your rig significantly. By about 11 am we were packed and ready and Rusty showed back up .

When Rusty shows up the energy just explodes always. Like star bursting in space— his energy spreads far and wide expecting nothing in return. He’s just a giver, and we try to give back as much as we can, even though we know it couldn’t ever meet what he’s given us. WE high fived, hugged, and managed to make quick work of the Hen House Butte. We found landing areas, found an exit point, and everyone was stoked on the jump-ability of the cliff. Jumping cliffs is a bit unique because you have to be concerned about many different factors other than the jump. So many people focus on footing, push, speed, etc to try to get a nice exit, but many of the factors of a safe BASE jump actually have to do with safe landing.

We couldn’t have been luckier for the time that we had chosen to try to open Tandem BASE Exits when we did. It was a beautiful November day that could have defined a perfect day in the region. We got hover dropped again and all of us made it to the exit point we scouted and got ready. David and I geared up and Sylvan helped us jump with a PCA. We turned on the camera, got stoked, and made the second Tandem BASE jump in the Valley of the gods ever.

IT was time for another. To be continued!
